Design Technology

At Longworth Primary School, we use Kapow to teach Design and Technology as well as class topic projects.

We believe Design and Technology is essential to prepare pupils to participate in tomorrow’s rapidly changing technologies. Teachers encourage children to be curious and to develop their investigating, designing, making and evaluating skills by thinking creatively.

The aims of Longworth Primary School are to:

  • Develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world.
  • Build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users.
  • Critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others.
  • Understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook.

In addition, Longworth Primary School’s high quality Design and Technology studies are enriched by:

  • Outdoor cooking lessons at Forest School.
  • Cooking lessons linked to the class topic.
  • School trips to science and engineering centres.

Pupil Voice

We value the view of our pupils and hold regular chats with groups of pupils from Year 1 – Year 6 to hear what they think about each subject.

We have recently obtained pupil voice for Design and Technology.

32 out of the 49 pupils said that DT is one of their favourite subjects.

All the pupils were able to identify a range of tools and equipment that they have used in weekly DT lessons, for example, in Years 1 and 2, the pupils knew they had used a needle for sewing and a chopping knife and board for when they made smoothies. In Years 3 and 4, the pupils knew they had used card, wood, plastic, foam, fabric, food and electrical components during DT lessons. In Years 5 and 6 the pupils knew they had used scissors, needles, saws, chopping knives, ovens, peelers and glue guns.

What do you like about DT lessons?

“Seeing the final project”

“Designing and creating”

“I like to make new things”

“It is fun!”
