Longworth Primary School Curriculum Intent

Nurturing curious minds

We are a small school that feels like a family. The four core values are evident in all our learning:

  • Be kind: we are tolerant, caring and cooperative; we are kind to each other and to ourselves
  • Be respectful: we show respect to all – ourselves, each other and our environment
  • Be curious: we apply our brains to learning new things, developing knowledge and skills; we our motivated and enthused with a love of learning; we are intellectually curious; we look beyond Longworth to all the diversity the world has to offer.
  • Persevere: we try hard and stick with it; we are resilient, independent and committed and we have a growth mindset.

The children experience a purposeful, broad, balanced and engaging knowledge based curriculum. This is delivered through thematic, cross-curricular, practical and creative approaches.

Knowledge is imparted through a combination of direct teaching and independent enquiry, and teachers plan to ensure that there is a balance with opportunities for children to achieve this following the ‘Three Essentials for the Learning Environment’: Active, Reflective and Consistent.

Active Learners

Talk partners (think, pair, share) change fortnightly. Always give children an opportunity to discuss before using lolly sticks; ask children to respond to another child’s response: Thumbs up / down to agree and disagree; no hands up and limit ‘teacher talk time’.

Develop Reflective Learners

Topic web at start of topic / Knowledge Organiser at the beginning of each short term; marking and feedback in the moment; green or orange highlight ‘I can’ statement; every lesson has ‘I can’ present in books with two or three success criteria; use self assessment in every lesson (red: no understanding; orange: need further support / practice; green: I get it and blue: I can coach); collaborative assessment; use of green editing pen by end of year 1; use of pink improving pen by the end of year 2.

Provide a consistent classroom environment

Colour coded displays / books / resources; literacy learning journeys; timetable of displays and children access age appropriate classroom apparatus and stationery. The aim of this process is to ensure the children have the right level of understanding to learn new knowledge and skills; understand what learning has happened and are able to articulate what they have learnt.
