Music

At Longworth Primary School, we use Music Express to teach Music.

We believe Music is a unique way of communicating that can inspire and motivate children. It is a vehicle for personal expression and it can play an important role in the personal development of people. Music reflects the culture and society we live in and so the teaching and learning of music enables children to better understand the world they live in and develops curiosity for different cultures and ideas. It also plays an important part in helping children feel part of a community. We provide opportunities for all children to create, play, perform and enjoy music, to develop the skills to appreciate a wide variety of musical forms and to begin to make judgements about the quality of music.

This is a summary of how our school delivers music education to all our pupils across three areas - curriculum music, co-curricular provision and musical experiences - and what changes we are planning in future years. This information is to help pupils and parents/carers understand what our school offers and who we work with to support our pupils’ music education.

Part A: Curriculum Music

This is about the content of music lessons, how much time is spent teaching music and any music qualifications or awards that pupils can achieve,

We follow the Music Express scheme for music through the whole school from Reception to Year 6. Each year group takes part in a 40 mins - 1hour less on per week.

In Year 5 and 6 - Otter Class - the children are taught by a music teacher from Oxfordshire County Music Service for one hour a week. Otter Class are learning to play the violin. Children are loaned instruments to practice at home. This is provided free of charge to the children.

Part B: Extra-curricular music opportunities

This is about the opportunities to pupils to sing and play music, outside of lesson time, including choirs, ensembles and bands, and how pupils can make progress in music beyond the core curriculum.

We have a piano teacher who offers lessons to children. These are accessible to all and we use Pupil Premium money to assist with lessons where necessary.

We welcome any other music tuition in school if parents have expressed a desire for additional music lessons.

We have a weekly singing assembly where children learn a variety of different songs.

Children in Early Years have access to musical percussion instruments during their adult-led and/or child-led activity time.

We advertise music clubs for holidays and opportunities that come from the county music service.

Part C: Musical experiences

This is about the other musical events and opportunities that we organise, such as singing in assembly, concerts and shows and trips to professional concerts.

Every year Early Years and Year 1 & 2 take part in a Nativity at Christmas which involves singing. Key Stage 2 (Years 3-6) take part in a Christmas Concert. These shows are performed to parents/carers.

Year 5 & 6 take part in a summer performance which involves singing and dancing. This show is performed to parents/carers.

Year 5 & 6 take part in a summer violin concert. This show is performed to the whole school and parents/carers.

Key Stage 2 regularly attends the Children’s Concert at the Sheldonian Theatre in Oxford.

In the future:

This is about what the school is planning for subsequent years.

● We aim to extend violin lessons to Year 3 & 4

● We would like to replace the music area outside

● We would like a group of children in Years 1 & 2 to start an ensemble group playing the cello
